I have had a few thoughts rolling around in my mind the past few days that I can’t seem to shake so perhaps if I put them down in writing, I can get them to go away, or at least move to a back row seat in my brain instead of being on center stage.
1. Grade Inflation = dishonesty with consequences
Grade inflation appears to be an even bigger problem now than it was pre-pandemic and it could spell disaster for a lot of students.
A student who cannot show proficiency on a state test should not be given an “A” in an honors math class. Students deserve to receive a grade that at least closely reflects their mastery of the subject—anything else is deception and leaves students and parents with the false sense that they totally get it when the truth is, they likely do not. But why would a parent inquire about a potential intervention (extra help, a tutor) when their kid is bringing home As in honors classes? They wouldn’t. This is so wrong.
2. Michael Steele and Joy Reid sink lower than low
As parenthood shows itself to be far more potent than partisanship, TV commentators and pundits are showing their true (and ugly) colors. Keep in mind that in the clip below, Michael Steele and Joy Reid are talking about parents who have raised legitimate concerns about sexually explicit and pornographic books in their kids’ school libraries and classrooms, books that are highly ideological in nature and include sex acts between adults and minors.
How much do they hate parents and how little do they think of all kids in America? There is a debate to be had for sure about where to draw the line on sexually explicit texts but mocking parents in this way is not the way to have it. Steele is the former Lt. Governor of Maryland and former chair of the Republican National Committee chair—what is he thinking talking in such a disrespectful way about parents as if all 63 million of them are clueless rubes? And to reduce all boys to porn consumers who are outside having sex behind the school during school dances?
Putting aside the very serious issue of open access to porn via the internet, is that really a justification for images of pedophilia and strap-on dildos being in schools?
Yes, that is what they are defending. (Graphic images below…)
3. This multi-millionaire thinks inflation is no biggie
The dirty little secret here, Willie, while nobody likes to pay more, on average, we have the money to do so. — Stephanie Ruhle
Start watching 47 seconds in if you’re in a rush and just want to see the comments that set my hair on fire.
Batya Ungar-Sargon hit the nail on the head in her response. (She is the deputy opinion editor of Newsweek and author of a new and very timely book, "Bad News: How Woke Media Is Undermining Democracy.”)
I was so frustrated by Ruhle’s comments because they seem to reveal that she only knows people who own their homes and “had no place to go” during COVID. Does she ever talk to *anyone* who rents their home, tries to stay within a strict budget for groceries and commutes to work by a car that runs on gasoline? People this out of touch with average Americans really shouldn’t be commenting on much of anything but certainly not INFLATION.
And now for some early Christmas cheer…
I mean, who isn’t dying to cover their face with a festive shag rug AND a snow globe that doubles as a Bambi prison?
To be fair to the governor, this photo was apparently taken at a mask version of the ‘ugly Christmas sweater’ party. I’m going to assume that she won first place.
Talk soon,
Erika
When are you going to post about the massive deflection on RICAS scores? Even the great Dan McGowan - "Sowams Elementary in Barrington with 70% ELA score".. so besides the obvious about the FRL % of Barrington schools, here is the GENDER breakdown of Sowams:
Female ELA - 83% !!
Male ELA - 53%
that's a 30% difference in ELA proficiency in the highest scoring school -- I suppose the gap is *smaller* in urban schools simply because the OVERALL proficiency is so low -- but when is the Commissioner or Gov going to talk about boys and reading???
